Red Cross Swim Preschool Program: 4 months to 5 years of age
The Swim Preschool program is made up of 7 levels: Starfish, Duck, Sea Turtle, Salamander, Sunfish, Crocodile and Whale. In this program kids progress through the lower levels based on participation and age. Preschoolers aged 3-5 move through the upper levels based on skill evaluation. These classes are generally smaller than the Swim Kids classes and are specifically taught for preschoolers.
Red Cross Swim Kids Program – 6 years +
The Swim Kids program has 10 levels and uses continuous evaluation for swimmers to progress.

Red Cross Swim Preschool – ages 3-5
3 years of age or older, and just starting out
Preschool 1 – Sea Turtle
3-5 years and can comfortably move and float with assistance, and put their face in the water
Preschool 2 – Salamander
Can enter shallow water safely; float and glide on the front and back without assistance; move around in a PFD, perform rhythmic breathing 3 times
Preschool 3 – Sunfish
Can jump into chest deep water, do front and back floats and recover in deep water, do surface support for 5 seconds and swim on front for 2 metres
Preschool 4 – Crocodile
Can float/move in deep water with assistance; breathe rhythmically 10 times; flutter kick while gliding on front, back and side; do surface support for 10 seconds and swim 5 metres continuously
Preschool 5 – Whale
Red Cross Swim – Ages 6+
Can enter shallow water safely; float and glide on the front and back without assistance; move around in a PFD, perform rhythmic breathing 3 times
Red Cross Kids Level 1
Can float/move in deep water with assistance; breathe rhythmically 10 times; flutter kick while gliding on front, back and side; do surface support for 10 seconds and swim 5 metres continuously
Red Cross Kids Level 2
Are comfortable in deep water; can breathe rhythmically 15 times; do front crawl at least 5 metres, arms recovering above water; and swim 15 metres continuously
Red Cross Kids Level 3
Can swim front crawl at least 10 metres while comfortably breathing to the side; and swim 25 metres continuously
Red Cross Kids Level 4
Can tread water (1:00); swim front crawl at least 15 metres; swim back crawl at least 15 metres, arms recovering above the water; and swim 50 metres continuously

Can swim efficient front and back crawl at least 25 metres; perform the whip kick on the front and back at least 10 metres; and swim 75 metres continuously
Red Cross Kids Level 6
Can swim front crawl and back crawl at least 50 metres; swim coordinated elementary backstroke and breaststroke at least 15 metres; and swim 150 metres continuously
Red Cross Kids Level 7
Can swim front crawl and back crawl at least 75 metres; swim elementary backstroke and breaststroke at least 25 metres; and swim 200 metres continuously
Red Cross Kids Level 8
Can swim front crawl and back crawl at least 100 metres; swim elementary backstroke and breaststroke at least 50 metres; swim coordinated sidestroke at least 15 metres; perform dolphin kick at least 10 metres; and swim 300 metres continuously
Red Cross Kids Level 9
Can swim front crawl and back crawl at least 100 metres; swim elementary backstroke and breaststroke at least 50m; swim 400m continuously

Private and Semi-Private Lessons
In addition to offering the Red Cross Swim Program through group lessons, Van Lawn also offers private and semi-private lessons.
Junior Swim Club (7 years+)
The Junior Swim Club is coached by a swim coach and is designed to build endurance and competitive swimming techniques.
Prerequisite: Participants must have completed Swim Kids 4 and be able to swim 2 lengths of the pool.
Craft and Swim (4 years+)
In this fun program, children create exciting water themed crafts and then finish off with a swim. This program is a pre-registration course.
Adult Programs
Master Swim Club – Adults only!
This program is designed for those seeking an aquatic workout that includes stroke improvement and training tips from a certified coach.
Adult Private & Semi-Private Lessons
Adult lessons are catered to the individual’s level. Whether you are seeking stroke improvement or want to learn to swim, our aquatic staff is ready to help.
Adult Aqua Aerobics
For Members who are looking for a low impact energetic work out in the water come and join our aqua Aerobics class. Great for toning your muscles and strengthening your abdominals!
Lifesaving Programs
Bronze Star
This new level is a warm up to Bronze Medallion. It teaches basic water rescues, first aid, and fitness.
Prerequisite: Recommended Star Patrol
Bronze Medallion
Teaches the four components of water rescue: judgment, knowledge, skills and fitness.
Prerequisite: Recommended Bronze Star or 13 years old.
Bronze Cross
Teaches the difference between a lifesaver and a lifeguard, principles of emergency procedures, and teamwork.
Prerequisite: Bronze Medallion
